INDEX

Sorted by media type, and then alphabetically by title.

“Primary Subject” denotes that the pairing in question is the main topic of the entry listed for them. “Partner Subject” means the pairing shares the entry more or less equally with another pairing or topic. “Secondary Subject” refers to instances where said pairing is addressed, but not as a main topic.  A “Mention” is anywhere from a sentence to a handful of paragraphs, and may be in the comments as opposed to the main body of the entry. (I would recommend using the “Find” function of your browser when looking up a pairing in an entry in which it is not the primary or partner subject. ) Some of the mentions are made by reader commenters and not by me.

Variations on brother/sister relationships are specified – step-siblings, adopted siblings, cousins, etc. – and you’ll also find a handful of other types of relationships – uncle/niece, for example – in the rare instances when they came up.

The relationships listed on this page are all of the relevant relationships that have been discussed on this blog. Just because a relationship has been discussed does not mean that it is one of my favorites or that I even ship it – that’s an important distinction to make and not one that I have marked here. (This is mainly the case for canon or canonically suggestive pairings, which are relevant and interesting for their intentional incest content, but not necessarily healthy or pleasant.)

Head over to my tumblr for a much more extensive list. (The relationships index is currently in-progress but feel free to send me a message to ask for the tag of a specific relationship.)

  1. Sparky says:

I didn’t you know you had covered video games too!

    • Astrid says:

Well, I’m not much of a gamer myself, but one of my commenters wrote in great detail about the pairings that I put into the index. I had never realized that some video games had such complex characterizations. Even though I’ve decided to focus on movies and TV, I certainly welcome discussion about other forms of storytelling as well. Television Tropes and Idioms includes video games on its lists of where tropes appear – I really should check out the examples for their brother/sister incest page.

      • Sparky says:

One of my favorite ships is from Bioware’s Dragon Age II. The protag, Hawke, can be a man or woman and they have a long standing rivalry with their younger brother, Carver (I prefer playing as a female Hawke). In fact, the rivalry is to the point that he’ll disapprove of just about anything his sibling does. There is a particular instance though where Carver stands up for his sibling, even though he spends much of the game being antagonistic. It’s a really fun relationship to explore. Lots of good reading.

        • Astrid says:

          Ooooh, I like it!

I love how complicated the relationship sounds. It would be fun even if they were antagonistic towards each other the entire game, but the moment where Carver stands up for him/her just makes it so much more interesting.
          carver and female hawke

I looked up some pictures. One of the captions of the first pictures I looked up was someone shipping male Hawke and female Hawke. And other one was a suggestive fanart for Carver and Bethany Hawke, and since she had the same last name I had to look her up on the wiki.

          bethany and carver

So how do you feel about Bethany? You like fem!Hawke and Carver better? What about male!Hawke and Bethany? Lots of incest possibilities in this game, LOL!

By “lots of good reading” do you mean there’s a lot of fanfic?

I wish I could play a game that was like a combination of The Sims and something like this, because obviously I’m very drawn to the relationship part…

Thanks for sharing. It’s going into the index right away!

          • Sparky says:

Depending on certain decisions the player makes, Carver doesn’t have to stay antagonistic. He’ll even be proud to call Hawke his sibling. I’ll have to dig up a couple of videos for you to show their relationship early in the game compared to the end when they’re saying their goodbyes. Because it can really be kind of a dramatic change.

Bethany is actually Carver’s twin and to be perfectly honest, I enjoy shipping the Hawke siblings in either combination. Bethany is much nicer to Hawke, compared to Carver. But Carver is the middle child and suffers from middle child syndrome. And he definitely has an inferiority complex when it comes to Hawke. It’s a little more pronounced if Hawke is male but you can’t exactly miss it if Hawke is female. As far as Bethany and male!Hawke are concerned, what I like most about their relationship is that Bethany really looks up to him and there are a lot of opportunities where he can defend her, since she’s a mage and mages are actually looked down on and judged pretty harshly in the setting.

Yes that’s what I mean by good reading. Most of it is in the kink meme on livejournal, but Hawkecest actually has a nice little following so there’s a bit of variety there.

And no problem. I love talking about my ships and so few people ship like I do, so it’s really nice to have this kind of discussion.

          • Sparky says:

            Links as promised!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=-HgmzGGEq5U#t=319s – This is just one of a few disagreements Hawke has with Carver. Also, since Hawke is customizable, the one in the video isn’t default, just as a heads up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCWNj5PQSWY – Hawke at the end of game when he’s feeling much more amicable with Hawke. Drastic change in my opinion. Carver’s changed from the default to look more like his sibling.

            • Astrid says:

I really, really enjoyed those. So much to love in just a few minutes of video. Even knowing so little, I felt like I was able to grasp their relationship right away. Their reunion in the second was really touching. I loved him saying, “It feels right to be by your side again.” And I’m pretty sure that pause before she told him that he going to make her tear up was a sexual tension pause, LOL.

              Thanks for the links!!!

      • Thunderfox says:

Sorry for the intrusion but this triggered one of my soapbox rant buttons.

It bothers me how the media paints video games as some lesser form of entertainment, and the majority of the populace has accepted it, though I will admit the industry and gamers have at times lived up to this perception.
As much as I dislike the franchise, I will give Call of Duty credit for putting somewhat of an effort into giving there games more a story recently, even if a vast majority of the player base ignores it infavour of the multilayer modes. There has always been games with good storylines, but particularly in the last several years games have taken tremendous steps forward interns of story-telling and character development in all genres, Shooters (FarCry 3), Action-adventure (Assassins Creed series, Uncharted), Strategy (Starcraft). No not every game will have a great story, but look at some movies, or even books, so there definitely is a market for mindless entertainment from all media-types.

Though by far the kings of story-driven games have been and will continue to be the RPGs, as it is their nature more than the other genres. Look at the longevity of the Final Fantasy series! (though their last few have been pretty terrible). Games can give that sense of interactivity thats missing from books and TV especially games like Dragon Age and the Mass Effect series(also by bioware). You can choose which faction to align yourself with, whether someone lives or dies, or who to romance(no worry about pesky show-runners or scripts getting in your way). Though there are still limitations, though in some cases very few. The worlds and characters in games can fell just as real and meaningful as they can in books. In the Fire Emblem series for example no matter how flat or irritating a character maybe, people will play through missions numerous times until they ensure everyone survives, because they care about them.
Eh, perhaps not my most eloquent rant but it’ll do. Now back on topic, heh.

Yeah the relationship between the Hawke siblings is very interesting even without an incestuous viewpoint, and said relationship has a decent following, even for Female!Hawke/Bethany, and Male!Hawke/Carver(the DA games have a really open view of sexuality). The world and politics that Bioware built play into it in a fairly fascinating way. Bethany is a mage, as was Daddy Hawke and Hawke can be if you want, and in Thedas (the world of Dragon Age) magecraft is heavily looked down upon and viewed with suspicion due to the actions of the Tevinter Imperium and the Chantry’s laws(The main religion), as well as some other factors. Most people born with magic live in a “Circle” where they can study and practise magic while watched over by the Templars, the military arm of the Chantry. The Hawkes however are apostates mages who live outside the circle, which is a capital offense so they’ve had to keep moving and stay low which is a large part of Carver’s resentment towards his Twin, Bethany, and older sibling. Though even if Hawke is a rogue or warrior he’ll still resent him/her for being a better fighter lol.

I can’t think of any games that match that description unfortunately, lol. I’d recommend trying to find a walkthrough or just the cut scenes if you can find them, on Youtube where someone uses Bethany or Carver alot and skipping through the gameplay portions, though there is some nice ambient dialogue between characters too.

        • Astrid says:

Even though I don’t have much experience with video games, I totally understand where you are coming from with your frustration. I can personally attest to the fact that video games are perceived a certain way, and the more I learn about it, the more I learn that it’s generally a misconception.

I think I would thoroughly enjoy the interactive and storytelling aspect of the stories. I just don’t have it in me to keep trying until I succeed, LOL. I always give it a few goes and then give up and do something else.

I’ve often seen commercials for video games and wished they were movies. What little I know of story lines of certain games would almost all make for very interesting TV shows, movies, or books. (Dragon Age, in particular, sounds fantastic.) In fact, I’m quite jealous of those who do enjoy video games and succeed at them, because it’s like they’ve got special access to something I’ll never experience. I mean, it’s one thing to watch a few cut scenes and read a description, and a whole other thing to play the game and go through the story and be a part of it all.

Thanks for your insight on Dragon Age and the sibling relations! Hearing about all of the incest shipping is truly making me sad that I’m not a part of that fandom.

  2. taylor says:

wait, you call tony/effy “Stonemcest?” come on, thats awkward and too long, that pairing should definitely be called “skincest” LOL. id love to see an entry about it, unlike some of your other entries the incest subtext is definitely intentional in the first two series so you would have tons of material

    • Astrid says:

“Stonemcest” is the only ship name I’ve seen for them, and adding “cest” to the last name of the brother/sister is the most common ship-name formula for incest pairings, but I have no problem with Skincest.

I agree, the subtext between Tony and Effy is definitely intentional though it provided very little fruit in the end. I haven’t revisited Skins in a while, so I can definitely see an entry on them coming up in the not-too-distant future. I’ll make a note of your interest. Thanks for the comment!

  3. lockster says:

Hi, have you ever watched the 2011 movie Shame? It stars Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan as siblings and the context is just…wow. Here a link to the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62nelnMXW3M

I hope it inspires you to make an article about them. :) Or even if it doesn’t I hope you enjoy the movie (though it is a heavy movie).

    • Astrid says:

      Hi!

Thank you so much for the recommendation!

I actually have seen Shame. I heard about it when it came into theaters, totally by chance if I remember correctly. I thought it sounded VERY promising and almost went and saw it in theaters, but I thought that would have been a little awkward, LOL. But I did see it the second it came out on DVD. Was honestly a little disappointed that there wasn’t some outright incest and not just subtext, which is probably why I didn’t write about it at the time. But I’ve been looking forward to going back and watching it again with lowered expectations. Obviously there are some great subtext scenes, and any movie with an adult brother/sister relationship at its core is going to be favored by me, intentional subtext or not. I did enjoy it, though I agree, it’s an extremely heavy film and very difficult to watch.

I really appreciate your interest in my commentary. Check back – I do hope to write at least a little bit about it at some point.

Thanks for your comment and the recommendation!

      • lockster says:

Just read your article on Shame, and it was awesome. I love how well you delve into the psychology of the characters, specially how you point out how it could or could not point at incest-y feelings.

That being said, have you played Bioshock Infinite? It has a unique sort of almost-incest situation (according to a good chunk of the people who’ve played it) and it would be interesting to know what you think about it.

        • Astrid says:

Thank you!!! I’m glad you enjoyed that post and thank you for your comments. In the case of Shame I spent a lot of time reading up on the characters so I’m glad you thought it was insightful because I did try hard to organize all the various thoughts and ideas cohesively and try to bring them together in such a way that they made sense and helped us understand the characters and the relationship. Of course it helped that there was a lot in the movie to dig into. And with that movie especially there is so much left up to interpretation.

Your timing in mentioning Bioshock Infinite is quite coincidental because just a few weeks ago I came across some fanart on tumblr and decided to research a little further. I ended up watching all of their cut scenes and looking around on tumblr for everything that had to do with the Luteces. (If you’re interested in looking everything I’ve reblogged for them is here.) So no, I haven’t played the game, but I’m familiar with Robert and Rosalind Lutece. As far as I’m concerned they’re essentially twins, even though the situation is obviously A LOT more complicated than that. I think it’s perfectly valid to interpret a romantic relationship as well, though it would have been nice if it had been more explicit and less subtextual. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Hi what about The Cement Garden and Close My Eyes

    • Astrid says:

Hi! Those movies (/book) are excellent examples of incest in fiction. I’ve only listed on here the pairings that I’ve written about, and sadly I just haven’t gotten to those two yet. Close My Eyes in particular is one of my absolute favorite examples of canon incest. I just haven’t had the time to give this blog proper attention or else I would have discussed them a long time ago. Thanks for the comment!

I’m not really sure if you’re into anime, but have you ever seen Oreimo or Yosuga No Sora? I think you might like them, especially Oreimo.

Generally speaking, I’m not hugely into anime. but I’m always willing to give it a try if it’s enthusiastically recommended to me. Sometimes certain series can be sort of hard to track down so a lot of it depends on the availability. I’ll make a note of those titles. Thank you so much for those recs!

I believe Oreimo is on crunchyroll.com. It’s not perfect, but I enjoyed it and it is fairly entertaining.
I really appreciate the time and effort you put into this site, it’s nice to see that other people share the same views that you do (especially since incest is such a controversial topic).

Oh, I didn’t know about that site – that information will be very helpful.

Thank you so much!!! One of the most rewarding parts of having this site has definitely been meeting so many other people who share the same views. It is so controversial so it’s nice that we can form a community at times – to share recommendations and to just not feel quite so alone.
